S
pring really is my favourite
season. I love to have a refresh
during this time of year and
making new accessories is high on my
May bank holiday to-do list. So I dust
off my sewing machine (which, due to
space issues, I pack away in winter!)
and set it up in the conservatory.
Nothing beats working on a new
pattern whilst listening to the gentle
song of the birds in the trees and
watching the daffodils sway in the
afternoon breeze.
Some of us choose to spring clean
but I prefer to spring craft. I like to
make new cushions, upcycle old
furniture and give the whole place a
bright and fresh lick of paint. Will
Taylor’s ten steps to colour confidence
on page 86 has inspired me to ditch
the neutrals and go bold with my
interiors this year. I’ll be splashing a
vibrant blue in my lounge very soon,
but if painting an entire wall fills you
with dread, then why not make a
feature instead?
Use this issue’s free butterfly and
flowers kit to create a vintage-inspired
plate wall display (p.25), or flip to
page 32 and work up our fabric letter
art. Both are quick and easy ways to introduce a vibrant pattern into a
plain room, whilst our concrete masterclass gives a dull bookshelf a
tough makeover (p.96). If you want to make something from scratch
then have a go at our table project on page 30 – it’s a fabulous way to
repurpose old wine bottle corks from past celebrations.
We’ve also explored the wonderful world of screen printing this issue
with two projects you could try – a beautiful curtain (p.52) and our tea
towel idea (p.84) are easy starter makes and both with floral motifs,
they really bring in the spring.
So go on Homemakers, forget the marigolds, grab your sewing
machine instead!
