Aesthetics of West-African and Afro-American Religions.

The course will give an overview of aesthetics of West-African and West-African-derived Afro-
American Religions, focussing on the religions of the Yorùbá, Fon and Ewe and Afro-Caribbean
Religions (Cuban Santería, Haitian Vodu and New-Orleans based Voodoo & Hoodoo).
Aesthetics of Yorùbá-Religion will comprise objects used in Ifá and Erindilogun-Divination, Gèlèdé
masking, drumming & dancing (a masking society dealing with female powers), Egungun masking,
drumming & dancing (a masking society in honour of the ancestors). Furthermore. Altar objects, dance
wands and other paraphernalia linked to the cult of the Òrìsà (esp. Oshun, Obatálá, Yemoja, Ogun,
Shàngó) will be introduced.
Concerning the traditional religion of the Ewe and Fon, we will discuss magical objects, called Bocio
and the visual representation of the pantheon of the Mami Wata-Cult, that includes adaptations of
Hindu and European iconography.
With respect to Afro-Caribbean Religions and their North-American derivatives, iconography, both of
the African-based type and that using Christian images will be introduced, devices used within
divination and their relationship to West-African traditions will be discussed, and objects found in
initiation rituals and on altars will be described as well as the drumming essential to rituals. Along the
aesthetic analysis of charms (such as the „mojo“) we finally will discover the impact of these traditions
and their vestiges in popular culture (mainly music and the movies).
Grades will be given due to attendance of the course, and the quality of an essay (10 pages of
Garamond 12 pt) delivered concerning one of the topics. A concise list of literature and related topics
will be supplied.
